Freshwater Snails

Mysteries, Nerites, and Pest Eradication

Snails can be the quiet helpers in your tank or the reason you can't see the glass. 10 lessons on mystery snails and their breathing siphon, algae-grazing nerites that can't breed in freshwater, apple snails and the laws around them, snail-hunting assassin snails, ramshorns, bladder and pond snail hitchhikers, why copper kills invertebrates, calcium and shell health, trapping and controlling a snail boom, and safe eradication when it gets out of hand.

About this course

Some snails you buy on purpose, and some ride in on a plant and take over. This course covers both. You'll start with mystery snails, how they breathe through a siphon, and why soft or acidic water damages their shells, then meet nerites, which clear glass algae, can't breed in freshwater, and climb out of open tanks. Lesson 3 covers the larger apple snails, the plants they mow down, and the state and federal rules that limit them. Lesson 4 introduces assassin snails, which hunt other snails. Then you'll get to know the snails that show up uninvited: ramshorns, bladder snails and pond snails, and what their numbers say about how much you're feeding. Lesson 7 explains why copper from fish medicines, fertilizers and old pipes can kill snails, and why copper treatments belong in a separate hospital tank. Lesson 8 covers calcium, cuttlebone and checking shells for damage. The last two lessons walk you through controlling a snail boom with feeding changes and overnight vegetable traps, and what to do safely when you need predators or a chemical treatment. The rule never changes: no snail goes into the wild.

  • Why copper kills snails, and when to treat fish in a separate hospital tank
  • Building strong shells with calcium, cuttlebone and calcium-rich vegetables
  • Controlling snail booms with feeding changes, vegetable traps, predators and safe treatments

Who this is for
