Freshwater Shrimp Keeping
Neocaridina (Cherries) and Caridina (Crystal Reds)
Shrimp are tiny, but a colony runs on water chemistry you can learn. 10 lessons on hardy Neocaridina cherry shrimp and drip acclimation, soft-water Caridina crystal reds and aquasoil, why sponge filters protect shrimplets, GH, KH and the molt cycle, the white ring of death, planted tanks and biofilm, why mixed-color tanks turn brown, shrimp-safe tank mates, feeding a colony without overfeeding, and keeping copper and planaria out.
About this course
Shrimp keeping looks simple from the outside: a small tank, some moss, a handful of red specks. What keeps a colony going is mostly water chemistry and a few setup choices, and this course walks you through them in order. You'll start with Neocaridina cherry shrimp, which handle ordinary tap water, and learn to drip acclimate new shrimp over one to two hours. Lesson 2 covers crystal red and bee shrimp, which need soft RO water, a GH-only shrimp salt and buffering aquasoil that wears out in one to two years. Then you'll swap any power filter for an air-driven sponge filter so newborn shrimplets don't get pulled in, and learn how GH, KH and TDS connect to molting and the white ring of death. The middle lessons build the planted tank shrimp graze in all day, explain why mixed color morphs turn brown within a few generations, and sort out which fish and snails can share the tank. You'll finish with feeding a colony without fouling the water, and keeping copper and planaria from wiping it out.
What you'll learn
- Cherry shrimp tap-water ranges, and drip acclimating new shrimp over one to two hours
- Soft RO water, shrimp salts and buffering aquasoil for crystal red and bee shrimp
- Why sponge filters protect shrimplets, and how GH, KH and TDS affect molting
- Spotting the white ring of death, and building a biofilm-rich planted shrimp tank
- Why mixed color morphs revert to brown, and which fish and snails are shrimp-safe
- Feeding a colony sparingly, keeping copper out, and clearing planaria without losing snails
Who this is for
Beginners setting up a first cherry shrimp nano tank, keepers ready to try crystal reds who need to understand RO water and aquasoil first, and anyone whose shrimp keep dying mid-molt or vanishing from a community tank.
