Ducklings and Goslings
Ducklings in the storm drain, a gosling that thinks your boot is its mother, and the bread that cripples them for life. 10 modules on the extraction, the no-bread rule, niacin, why hand-raised ducklings drown, the mirror trick, and the goose that gets euthanized for loving people.
About this course
Every spring a mother duck marches her brood across a parking lot and three of them drop through the storm-drain grate. This course starts there — hazard lights, crowbar, landing net, and the phone recording that brings her back — and then covers everything that goes wrong when people "help": bread that twists wings, chick starter that bows legs, a bathtub that drowns a duckling with no waterproofing, and the gosling that imprints on a boot. You'll learn the mirror trick for a lone orphan, turtle-bite first aid, avian-flu hygiene, and why the kindest ending is a rehabber with a flock.
What you'll learn
- Storm-drain extraction: protect the site, lift the grate, net the ducklings, and reunite them with the hen using a recorded mother call
- Why bread, crackers and popcorn cause permanent Angel Wing — and what to feed instead
- The niacin rule: brewer's yeast at 1 tablespoon per cup of feed, or a real waterfowl starter
- Why hand-raised ducklings have no waterproof oil and drown, and when supervised swims become safe
- Imprinting in the first 24–48 hours and the mirror trick that calms a single orphan
- Snapping-turtle bites, avian influenza and bacterial hygiene — gloves, bleach, and fresh water
Who this is for
Anyone who has found ducklings in a drain, a gosling alone on a golf course, or a wet, peeping orphan on the pond edge; park-goers who want to stop the bread; and animal lovers who want the weekend hold done right before the rehabber opens.
