Hummingbird Nestlings
The Micro-Triage Challenge
A nest the size of a thimble, babies lighter than a nickel, and a heart that beats 1,200 times a minute. 10 modules on sewing a fallen nest back into the tree, keeping nestlings at 90°F, why sugar water alone starves them, and getting them to a rehabber before the clock runs out.
About this course
Hummingbird nests are built from plant down and spider silk, and they fall — in wind, in rain, under a hedge trimmer. The babies inside are naked, blind, and weigh less than a nickel. This course covers the first moves that actually save them: sewing the nest back into the tree so the mother finishes the job, holding 90°F and 50–60% humidity when you can't, and the three fatal mistakes (sugar water alone, a big syringe, a full crop). Then it shows you what a rehabber does with a bird that needs feeding every 15 minutes from dawn to dark — so you understand why speed is everything.
What you'll learn
- Re-attach a fallen nest with garden spider silk and thread, then watch for the mother for 1–2 hours
- Build a padded emergency brooder that holds 90°F without drying out tissue-paper skin
- Why nectar or sugar water alone starves a nestling inside 24 hours
- How rehabbers mix the nectar-insect slurry and feed it in micro-drops every 15–30 minutes
- Crop stasis — the squishy, stagnant crop you must never feed into
- Feeder and syringe biosecurity: no honey, no sweeteners, 4:1 sugar water boiled for two minutes
Who this is for
Gardeners and homeowners who just found a thimble-sized nest on the ground, anyone keeping a hummingbird feeder, and animal lovers who want to know exactly what to do in the first hour instead of guessing.
