The Finch Flight Cage
Society, Zebra, and Gouldian Mixed-Flock Dynamics
A finch flock lives or dies on cage width and roommate choice. 10 lessons on horizontal flight cages and 3/8-inch bars, the temperaments of society, zebra and Gouldian finches, the mixed-flock rulebook for bullies, hybrids and sex ratios, the micro-diet with egg food and iodine, nest boxes and hormonal egg-laying, recognizing egg-binding in a tiny hen, low-stress capture and the bander's grip, trimming micro-nails, air sac mites, and light cycles and molting stress.
About this course
Finches are small, fast and easy to get wrong in a tall decorative cage. This course starts with the cage itself in Lesson 1: width over height, perches at the ends to keep a clear flight corridor, and bar spacing no wider than 3/8 inch. Lesson 2 introduces the three personalities you are most likely to mix, the peacemaking society finch, the spirited zebra and the delicate Gouldian. Lesson 3 is the rulebook for keeping them together: spaced feeding stations so bullies cannot block the bowl, no closely related species that might cross-breed, and balanced sex ratios. Lesson 4 builds the micro-diet from millets and canary seed with sprouts, egg food and an iodine block for goiter prevention. Lesson 5 explains why year-round nest boxes exhaust hens and what to offer instead. Lesson 6 teaches you to spot egg-binding in a 15-gram hen and what to do in the hour before you reach the vet. Lesson 7 is low-stress capture under dimmed lights and the bander's grip, Lesson 8 trims micro-nails under a magnifying lamp, Lesson 9 covers the clicking breath of air sac mites, and Lesson 10 keeps Gouldians warm and lit properly through the molt.

- The mixed-flock rulebook: spaced feeders, no hybrid pairs, balanced sex ratios, plus the micro-diet with iodine
- Managing nest boxes to stop exhausting breeding cycles, and open shelves for secure sleep
- Recognizing egg-binding in a tiny hen and getting her warm on the way to the vet
- Dim-light capture, the bander's grip, and trimming micro-nails without hitting the quick
- Air sac mite signs and vet treatment, and light and temperature stability for molting Gouldians
Who this is for
Anyone setting up a first finch flock who is choosing between a tall cage and a wide one; keepers who already have zebras and want to add Gouldians without a feather-plucking war; and owners who have never caught or handled a finch and dread the day they have to.
