Budgerigar Bootcamp

From Chaos to Calm with the World's Favorite Little Parrot

The budgie is not a starter pet, and this course treats it like the parrot it is. 15 lessons on the outback nomad and its prey instincts, the starter bird myth, finger-taming without chasing, converting a seed addict to real food, flight cage layout and bar spacing, reading body language, adding a second budgie safely, night frights and first aid, toys and the mirror trap, indoor flight safety, caring for a senior budgie, vocal mimicry, hormones and chronic egg-laying, weekly weigh-ins and health checks, and the long bond with a tiny bird.

About this course

Budgies were my first pets as a kid, and I did a lot of it wrong, so this course is the one I wish I'd had. It opens with who the budgie is: an outback nomad that flies in flocks of thousands and never stops watching the sky, which is why yours flinches when someone walks past too fast. Lesson 2 takes apart the starter pet label and the neglect it invites. Then you get to work: taming with a still hand and a millet spray instead of a chase (Lesson 3), converting a seed addict with fine chop and the sprinkle trick (Lesson 4), and laying out a wide flight cage with safe bar spacing (Lesson 5). The middle of the course is reading your bird: body language, flock introductions with a proper quarantine, night fright first aid, safe toys and why mirrors have to go, and room-proofing for out-of-cage flight. The last lessons cover senior budgies like my Neige at 11, vocal mimicry, hormones and chronic egg-laying in hens, weekly gram-scale weigh-ins and health checks, and what a decade with a 35-gram parrot teaches you.

What you'll learn

  • Where budgies come from, why they startle easily, and why the starter pet label harms them
  • Taming with a still hand and millet, converting a seed addict, and the wide flight cage
  • Reading beak grinding, tail bobbing and eye pinning, safe introductions, and night fright first aid
  • Safe balsa and shredding toys, why mirrors have to go, and room-proofing for indoor flight
  • Senior budgie comfort with flat ledges and lower perches, and what their warbles and words mean
  • Stopping chronic egg-laying, weekly gram-scale weigh-ins and health checks, and the long bond

Who this is for

First-time budgie owners who want to do it right from day one; anyone whose budgie has lived on seed for years and still flees the hand; and keepers of an older budgie who want to make its last years comfortable.
