Running from Day One
How to Save Baby Quail, Turkeys, and Killdeer
They hatch fluffy, eyes open, and running — and they will not open their mouths for your toothpick. 10 modules on finding a scattered brood, the warm box, the tapping trick, the marble water dish, pasty-butt, splayed legs, and why a hand-raised turkey becomes a 20-pound problem.
About this course
Quail, wild turkeys, grouse and killdeer hatch fluffy, eyes open, and running — the opposite of a naked robin chick. That changes everything about how you help them. This course covers the first weekend: finding a brood that scattered after a dog attack, building a draft-free warm box, teaching a clueless chick to peck, the marble trick that stops drowning in a water dish, clearing pasty-butt, hobbling splayed legs before they set, and washing your hands like you mean it. It ends with why you hand them to a gamebird rehabber instead of raising a turkey that will one day attack your kids.
What you'll learn
- Why precocial chicks never gape — and why a toothpick or syringe will choke them
- The peep-and-scatter search after a dog or cat attack, and how to reunite the brood with the hen at dusk
- An 18-inch brooder with a 95°F warm corner, a cool corner, and no slippery newspaper
- The tapping trick and the social trigger that get a starving chick to start pecking
- A shallow saucer full of marbles so clumsy babies can drink without drowning
- Pasty-butt and splayed-leg triage in the first 48–72 hours, before they become fatal or permanent
Who this is for
Anyone who has found striped killdeer chicks on a parking lot, quail babies after a mowing, or a turkey poult alone in the woods; rural homeowners and dog owners; and anyone who wants the weekend bridge to be done right before the rehabber opens.
