Caique Care Guide
Managing Energy, Surfing, and Safe Play
A caique does not climb, it hops, and your home has to be built for that. 10 lessons on the clown of the canopy and its drive for motion, hair surfing and wrestling with rules, channeling the famous hop through target training, stopping the overstimulation bite with a 60-second time-out, building a gym of cargo nets, bungee ropes and swings, fueling constant motion without fat, ending cage territoriality, preventing window strikes and floor accidents, the 12-hour sleep cure for a biting bird, and safe socialization with other birds.
About this course
Caiques are the clowns of the canopy, and Lesson 1 explains what that means in your living room: a bird that walks, tumbles, rolls on its back and hops stiff-legged across the table instead of climbing like other parrots, and that turns unspent energy into pacing, picking and outbursts. Lesson 2 sets rules for hair surfing and finger wrestling before the play teaches your bird that skin is a target. Lesson 3 turns the famous hop into focus with target training and homemade obstacle courses. Lesson 4 is the overstimulation bite: the pinned pupils, tight feathers and fanned tail that come first, and the calm 60-second time-out that resets the nervous system. Lesson 5 builds the gym, with sisal cargo nets, bungee ropes and swings hung on stainless hardware, and a floor tray for a bird that loves to walk. Lesson 6 fuels all that motion with pellets, chop and sprouted seeds while keeping fats for training. Lesson 7 ends cage territoriality with a target stick and no sleep tents, Lesson 8 room-proofs for a bird that hops under feet and flies at windows, Lesson 9 is the 12-hour sleep cure for a biting, screaming caique, and Lesson 10 covers safe socialization with other birds.
