Beaver Kits

The Semi-Aquatic Rescues

The flood took the lodge and left a shivering, waterlogged kit on the bank. 10 modules on drying and warming without burning it, the high-fat formula beavers need, the 2-inch triage tub, oil-gland grooming, willow and aspen weaning, why a lone kit stops eating, enteritis, Giardia safety, and the two-year rehab reality.

About this course

Spring floods breach beaver lodges, and what washes up on the bank is a cold, soaked, exhausted kit whose baby fur soaks through like a sponge. This course is the rescue done properly: towel and low-heat dryer, full warming before a drop of formula, then the specialized high-fat milk that beaver kits need (never cow's milk), the 2–3 inch lukewarm tub for a first supervised swim, the grooming that stands in for a mother spreading oil, willow and aspen branches at weaning, and the thing that surprises everyone — a beaver kit raised alone will stop eating from loneliness. It finishes with belly trouble, 'beaver fever' (Giardia) safety, and why a beaver is a two-year, wetland-facility project that no house can hold.

What you'll learn

  • Lodge washouts: what a flood-displaced kit looks like and the warm, padded transport that comes first
  • Drying saturated baby fur with microfiber and a hair dryer on its lowest settings, and warming fully before feeding
  • Why beaver milk is so rich, and the high-fat, low-lactose replacers rehabbers use — never cow's milk
  • The 2–3 inch lukewarm triage tub, 5–10 minute supervised swims, and post-swim grooming to spread oils
  • Weaning at 4–6 weeks onto fresh willow and aspen branches, water plants, dandelion and clover
  • The lone-kit trap, enteritis emergencies (stop formula, warm electrolytes, vet), Giardia precautions, and the multi-year soft-release mandate

Who this is for

Anyone on a river, creek or pond after a flood who finds a soaked kit on the bank; landowners with an active beaver colony; and the people who want to understand why the rehab center said 'two years' when they handed it over.
