The Snake Rescue Guide
Glue Traps, Netting, and Road Rescues
The snake on the glue board, in the garden net, on the warm road at dusk. 10 modules on venomous vs. harmless (and the one rule: if it might be venomous, you don't rescue it, you call), dissolving glue traps with cooking oil, cutting netting without cutting scales, herding basking snakes off asphalt, mower wounds, the pillowcase-and-bucket, hooks and brooms instead of hands, snakes dug up in winter, Salmonella, and finding a reptile rehabber.
About this course
Most snakes that need help are harmless, stuck, and terrified, and most of the harm done to them comes from well-meaning hands. This course gives you a calmer plan. It starts with the only rule that matters: how to recognize the native venomous families, why head shape fools people, and why any snake you can't positively clear is not yours to rescue (back away, call). Then, for the snakes you can help: pouring cooking oil over a glue board instead of ripping the snake off it, covering the head and cutting garden netting with bandage scissors, using a broom or hook to move a basking snake off warm asphalt, keeping a mower-cut snake from drying out, the pillowcase-and-bucket that nothing escapes from, why you never pin a head, why a snake dug up in winter can't just be put back on the lawn, how to handle Salmonella, and why injured snakes go to reptile specialists, not the shelter.
