The Goldfish Reality

High-Bio-load Giants and Species-Only Tanks

Goldfish are not bowl fish. They are long-lived carp with big appetites and a lot of waste. 10 lessons on why bowls fail them, single-tail versus fancy goldfish, the cold-water rule, the heavy bio-load and tank size, filtration at 10 to 15 times the tank volume per hour, why they don't belong with tropical fish, sinking foods and swim bladder trouble, goldfish-proof plants, wen trimming with a fish vet, and the 10 to 15 year lifespan.

About this course

Goldfish are one of the most mistreated fish in the hobby, mostly because of the bowl. This course starts by explaining why bowls fail them: ammonia builds up fast, stress stunts growth and lives get cut short. Lesson 2 separates single-tail goldfish, which reach 12 to 14 inches and belong in ponds, from egg-shaped fancies, which reach 6 to 8 inches and suit indoor tanks, and explains why the two shouldn't share a home. Lesson 3 covers the cold-water rule of 65 to 72 degrees with no heater. Lessons 4 and 5 deal with waste: about 30 gallons for the first fancy and 10 to 15 more for each one after, and filtration rated at 10 to 15 times the tank volume per hour. Lesson 6 explains why goldfish don't belong with tropical fish or plecos. Then come sinking foods to help prevent swim bladder trouble, tough plants that survive constant digging, and when a wen that covers the eyes needs trimming with a fish vet. The course ends with the real lifespan, including Paola's goldfish Scrappy, who lived to about 13.
